Connection with the internal research programmes and strategies

The aim of this project falls within one of the core research activities of the Dondena Centre which is to develop mathematical models for disease spread and prevention, to investigate on social dynamics and epidemics, and to provide economic evaluations in support of policy decision making level collaboration has been established between the Dondena Centre, Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Regione Piemonte (ASL Alessandria)  in relation to the use of transmission dynamic models (rather than static decision tree) to perform cost-effectiveness analysis of vaccination programs taking into account all direct and indirect effects of the interventions and allowing prioritisation of public health resources. In this respect, LExEM Project would also allow activities within the Centre related to the development of models for disease spread and prevention and cost-effectiveness analysis for policy evaluation to expand even further and to strengthen collaboration with other groups and research centres based in the Italian context and involved in modelling population processes.

Description of the research group working on the project

The DONDENA Centre gathers a well formed and interdisciplinary group of people which by using different methodological tools address research questions related to population dynamics, sociological phenomena, the impact of policies and interventions.

Alessia MelegaroThe staff of the Dondena Centre currently involved in the study of Policy Modelling and epidemic processes is composed by 1 senior researcher (Alessia Melegaro) and 2 Post-Docs (Piero Poletti and Emanuele del Fava). The staff in the research group has strong quantitative skills with specific expertise in infectious diseases modelling, statistical analysis of infection data as well as economic evaluation of the impact of infectious diseases from the public health payer or societal perspectives.

The DONDENA Centre has an ongoing collaboration with the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), Imperial College (UK), Kenyan Medical Research Institute (Kilifi, Kenya) and Pisa University on the study of the effects of demographic changes on the epidemiology of infectious diseases in developing countries (ERC DECIDE project; PI: Alessia Melegaro) and a longstanding collaboration with the Health Protection Agency in London UK, in relation to the analysis of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of vaccination programs. Moreover we also have ongoing collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Medicine "Pedro Kouri" in Havana, Cuba, jointly with Hasselt University, Belgium, in order to model infection data for Dengue in Havana.
